What is education?

Education is a process that develops our mind through taking formal lessons from an institution like school, college or university. It is mental and intellectual training, which brings opportunities of growth and helps to overcome problems in the way of progress. Again, the purpose of education is to develop personality and raise skills to face problems. The goal of education is also to train the individual to choose the right path to move forward. It improves our mind and purifies our feelings. Education broadens our perspective and helps us to be aware of our responsibilities.

 

Definition of education

I can state some opinions of various educators about education. Socrates opines that education is the eradication of falsehood and the discovery of truth.

Plato remarked that education is the capacity to feel pleasure and pain in the right moment and it develops in the body and in the soul of the pupil all the beauty and all the perfection.

 Aristotle stated that education is the creation of a sound mind in a sound body. It develops man's faculty specially his mind so that he may be able to enjoy the contemplation of supreme truth and Goodness and beauty in which perfect happiness essentially consists.

 Rabindranath Tagore said that the highest education is that which does not merely gives us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence.

 Iqbal said, “Education aims at developing innate powers of man.” 

 

Universal Definition of Education

Education is a process and the chief goal of which is to bring about desirable changes in the behavior of learner in the form of acquisition of knowledge, proficiency in skills & development of attitudes.

Necessity of Education

Newman says that education gives a man a clear conscious view of his own opinions and judgements, a truth in developing them, an eloquence in expressing them and a force in using them. That is why education is compared to light which dispels darkness and helps us to distinguish between truth and falsehood. In 1974, Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere rightly told at an international conference that the primary purpose of education was to liberate people from habits and behaviors that limit his humanity. He added that education should develop humanity and global brotherhood so that it can act as a catalyst for change towards greater well-being.

 

Why is education necessary?

Education is one of the basic needs of human life and is essential for any kind of development. Most people are deprived of education due to poverty and socio-economic conditions of a country. Many illiterate people do not have proper knowledge about health, sanitation, birth control. If they were educated, they could lead healthy and well-planned lives. Education is one of the best ways to earn money and spend it wisely. It helps us to make the right decisions in life and to fulfill our responsibilities. It helps in grain production, food conservation, environmental protection and fulfillment of our social responsibilities. Education is the only medium that awakens our logical vision. It spreads the light of awareness among us and this awareness is a prerequisite for social development.

 

Education and Society

Education is a social process. Because all the education of a person takes place in the social environment, outside the society no education is possible in life. Man is a social being and so we get mixed with different types of people and face lots of problems. The problems we face teach us. In the course of life, people have to face various problems and so education is the knowledge or experience gained through problem solving.

 

Benefits of Education

Education is the knowledge or skill that solves all the complicated problems. Thus, a person gets education from the society we live. The goal of education is the behavioral change. Education helps people to master new behaviors by changing old ones. A person learns manners and etiquette from family, parents, society and professional bodies. So, in this way people acquire education.

 

Importance of Education in Life

People are social and political creatures. What a child or student sees and learns at home and in the surroundings is nurtured in educational institutions. Education plays a very important role in the growth and personality development of the students. Education helps students to develop as good citizens and patriots. For adapting to a changing society formal education is greatly necessary for all. So, formal education plays a fundamental role in managing life properly.

 

Objectives of Education

There are many objectives of education. An educated person gains physical, mental, social and emotional development. A student learns to develop speech freely, work skillfully and have movement and behavior development. It gives the student the freedom to see, hear and speak so that he can learn from the nature and environment of his choice. Physical excellence and mental satisfaction through wandering in the realm of sports can be earned through formal education. A learned person achieves good manners, courtesy and politeness by education and different experiences through deep intimacy with nature.

 

Conclusion

Education is a lifelong process that begins with the birth of a child and continues until death. In the meantime a person learns many things in the day to day life by experience of everyday activities and innate understanding and wisdom.
