Dowry System

Dowry System

Despite the increase and modernization of women's participation in various professions, the dowry system is becoming widespread in Bangladesh. If somehow the bride's family is unable to pay the dowry as demanded by the groom's family, the wife is brutally abused by her in-laws and sometimes even burnt to death. Dowry is a familiar word and is practiced in Bengali society without any hesitation or guilt. Dowry is a gift given by the bride to the groom or his family at the time of marriage. After the wedding, the groom is given a variety of household items such as furniture, electrical appliances such as refrigerators, televisions, etc. and in addition to these personal items such as clothes, ornaments and money. The birth of a daughter is not welcomed because of dowry and in some families it is considered a curse. When someone's daughter is born, her parents become concerned about the dowry of the newborn child. They spend a lot of money as dowry during the marriage of their daughter. In a middle-class family, parents save as much money as possible for their child's happiness after marriage, even if they refrain from enjoying their happy life. Many films show a girl being burned alive for dowry, which is a nightmare for a girl's family. They teach the illiterate about the terrible effects of dowry and forbid them to take or give dowry at the time of marriage of their son or daughter. To prevent this injustice, young men and women refused to marry with dowry. In fact, girls should stand up against dowry with all their might as dowry is the main cause of disrespect for women in Bangladesh. Women should focus more on their education and future formation than marriage and this is the only way to save them.

Dowry is a social disorder. Its poisoning affects our whole society. It is the dowry system which is on the rise now. It has been in vogue since ancient times though. This practice is a  great imprecation in women's life. Many women are constantly being oppressed because of dowry. In the Bangladeshi male-dominated society, women's happy families are breaking up because of dowry. Dowry hampers the social and human dignity of women. The dowry system degrades women and slows down the development of the entire country. It also hampers the development of the entire nation.

It is dowry which is the amount of money, resources, ornaments, furniture, entertainment that the bride or her family  gives to the groom during, before and after the marriage. At present, the rich provide houses, cars and land as a token of marriage.

There is little knowledge about the origin and development of dowry system. However, since ancient times, this practice of dowry has been spreading in the society in different ways at different times in this subcontinent. We find many references to the exchange of dowry in the marriages of various mythological characters of the ancient Ramayana and the Mahabharata. As a result of the nobility tradition prevalent during the reign of King Ballal Sen, the father of the daughter had to pay a large sum of money to the potter before the daughter became unprotected. Besides, in order to marry a girl of a lower caste to a higher caste, giving a lot of money to the father of the girl was a daily occurrence in those days. It is also known about the widespread use of dowry in other poems including Mangalkavya in the literature of the Middle Ages.

The main reason for dowry is greed. In many cases, the family of the boy marries the boy early for the sake of money. Poverty or financial hardship is the main reason for the increase in dowry in our country. Many people take dowry later under the pressure or lack of poverty. In a male-dominated society, prejudice and bigotry hinder the proper status of women and it inspires the dowry system. The main reason for the creation of dowry system is the ignorance and economic dependence of the backward women in education and the consequent ignorance of the society.

Dowry creates huge problems in our life and society. Husbands and wives often do not get along because they do not get married according to their greed for dowry. Even if the amount of dowry is a little less, the people of the in-laws torture the daughter of a poor family in various unbearable ways. Parents of many poor girls have become destitute and helpless while constantly meeting the whims of their husbands and in-laws. Unable to meet the demand for dowry, many women have to leave their husbands' homes and return to their father's house. Sometimes divorce is also granted. Thus, many women choose to commit suicide because they cannot bear the constant torture and oppression.

This practice has discriminated between men and women, turned women into social stigma and commodities. It creates inequality between men and women. And it also destroys social structures and institutions. It is a heinous and inhumane social norm that violates the fundamental rights of women. Really, the poor parents do not gladly accept their daughters under the curse of dowry. The effects of dowry are degrading for women's lives.

Dowry system creates violence against women. At present, as a result of dowry system, cruelty, atrocities and violence against women are normal in day to day life of the people. In fact, the dowry system paves the way for women's oppression and it is also a form of physical and mental torture.

People of all classes, professions and religions should come forward to eradicate the dowry system from the society so that everyone may have a healthy mentality, a strong sense of life.
