Working women in Bangladesh
Working Women in Bangladesh
Women are upgrading their former position and presenting their
qualifications and achievements in family, society or public life by their activities. Women's empowerment is possible only when women have the opportunity to
use the existing opportunities to make changes in their education, career and
lifestyle without any hindrance or restriction. They are on the highways
of empowerment, economic development, political
stability and social changes.
Presence of working women in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh women are working more and more. None can deny
that there is a conspicuous change in our society is the presence of working
women outside the home. Of course, it must be acknowledged that women have
always worked within the household but this commonly is not counted as 'work'.
It is a great regret that women's roles in agricultural societies
especially in the villages particularly
during harvest time have not been
recongnised either.
Women in various professions
It is due to economic necessity or the urge to establish an
individual identity or both, nowadays many women are entering the outside
workforce for earning money to make a better and established life. They are
joining a wide range of professions as
engineer, doctor, teacher, day labourer etc.
Moreover, it is both educated
women who are opting to work and women with little or no education have come
out of their cocoons to earn and to
become self-reliant. Life is not easier
for women now but more difficult. Women have to fulfil their roles of wife,
mother and homemaker. At work, as they
have to compete with men, they must prove their worth twice over in
order that they can survive.
Position of women
The position of women in Bangladesh is upgrading now. They are
now working in a variety of professions. The presence of working women outside
the home is on increase. Really, they have to compete with men to prove their ability.
Women, in general, were supposed to do household activities.
Working women in Bangladesh
Both educated and uneducated are working outside the home in
Bangladesh. They are no longer detached from the outside world. They are
struggling hard to survive in this very sophisticated world. They work more and
more during harvesting in rural areas. It is unfortunate that their roles in
agriculture have not been admitted in
Bangladesh. Women have to compete with men for equal rights.
Women’s contribution in economy
The economic progress that Bangladesh has made in the last
ten years is very promising. Poverty has been reduced at a significant rate.
Even the average life expectancy of the citizens has increased. Along with
economic progress, Bangladesh has also made progress in various social
indicators including education, health and women's empowerment. Women play a vital role economic sector.
Female empowerment
Women's empowerment is also an important milestone in the
index of social progress. Women are more visible in various fields than ever
before as various steps are taken to ensure women's participation at all levels
of society. Most of the credit for the bright image of Bangladesh's garment
industry in the world today goes to working women of the country. Women's participation in the
health sector is now more than half. Meanwhile, 80 per cent of micro-borrowers
are women who are involved in various micro-enterprises. Despite some brilliant
examples of women's empowerment, the situation and position of the entire
women's society seems particularly depressing. Although both men and women liberated this country through a
bloody war of liberation, the women of Bangladesh are not free
from discrimination. This means that this country has not yet
become a woman's own. There are still many obstacles in the way of women's
advancement. They have to deal with various adversities all the time.
Women's advancement
For good reason, the out-of-home movement of adolescents and
women associated with many sectors has increased significantly, which is
an important indicator of women's advancement. Apart from this, the
participation of women in other formal workplaces such as government-private
and semi-government offices-courts, factories, schools-colleges-universities,
hospitals-clinics and business establishments is also increasing day by day.
Gender equality in the workplace
The question may be, what is the status and position of
women in formal workplaces? Negative answers are still relevant in this case. Where
women make up half of the total population of the country, the bright position
of a handful of women cannot alleviate the filth of the inferior status of the
entire women's society. The constitution of independent Bangladesh has given
women equal rights in all fields. In the last 50 years, various laws and policies
have been formulated in the country to implement this promise of the
constitution. Bangladesh has also signed many international documents that
speak in favor of gender equality. But gender equality has not been established
in this country yet. Women are still discriminated in their way while working.
Women in the workforce
The unimaginable economic prosperity, development and growth
that has been achieved in Bangladesh in spite of various economic, social and
natural adversities is mainly due to the empowerment and progress of women, and their contribution in this regard is undeniable. The women of Bangladesh shine a light of hope in participating in the
formation of the country by rising to a non-discriminatory-respectable position
in family and social life.
Female labor
The traditional belief of common people regarding women's working
ability is obviously wrong. In fact, women are entering the workforce for the
attainment of their economic solvency as most of the women in our society have developed confidence within themselves. They have
to excel themselves by competing with men. It is high time the gov.t ensured
the dignity of women's work.
